I was talking with a friend the other day, and she remarked, “Sometimes I feel like as soon as I get one area in my life under control, some other area falls apart.”

Doesn’t it feel that way? Everything in our personal life starts going great, and work becomes really difficult. Everything at work lines up, and we start having health issues. Our health improves, but our finances take a hit. Sometimes it really does seem that we can’t catch a break.

Here’s the hard reality – because the world is fallen and sinful, chaos and uncertainty will always exist. Always. Sometimes, we will mess things up for ourselves. Other times, uncertainty will be thrust upon us. Either way, we can’t avoid disruptions to our lives.

Uncertainty is exhausting.

The past two years have been a whirlwind of uncertainty, and I’ve been looking forward to rest and peace now that everything is resolved. Instead, I’m feeling the truth of my friend’s remark. New uncertainties have replaced old ones, and I’m feeling tired.

In moments of uncertainty, we must choose to look at the ONE who is always certain.

This means, first, that I have to know and trust that God is GOOD, that God is FAITHFUL, and that God is CONSTANT.

God is not man, that he should lie,
or a son of man, that he should change his mind.
Has he said, and will he not do it?
Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

Numbers 23:19

Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change

James 1:17

This also means that I have a choice. I have to choose to focus on God. I have to choose to trust His sovereignty. I have to choose to surrender.

Yes, disruptions and distractions come – and there’s nothing we can do to stop them.

I control how I respond to those disruptions, and I control where my mind and heart lingers.

Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be acceptable in your sight, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer.

Psalm 19:14

So many unknowns lie before me. So many unknowns lie before my friends and family. When I think about all the possible outcomes, I get overwhelmed. I don’t know what is best. I don’t understand all the circumstances. I don’t know what will happen tomorrow, next month, or next year. But I know you are good. I know you are sovereign. I know you have not changed. I choose to focus on you. I choose to follow you. Allow my thoughts and speech to be pleasing to You today. For your glory. Amen.

In moments of uncertainty, we must choose to look at the ONE who is always certain.
